2 April 2012

Dear Cobra Country:

You can mark my "In 'N' Out Burger" CSX4044 Cobra SOLD! And in only a few short days on CobraCountry!

Thanks to Curt's photography tips which made CSX4044 really “pop” in the pictures, and CobraCountry's 'global reach,' my ad touched the heart of a buyer in Monaco!

Yes, my Cobra will be living it up in Monaco and on the French Riviera. I'm somewhat envious. The buyer (i.e., lucky new owner) made some inquiries 3 days after my Prestige Showcase ad went up, and we reached an agreement early last week. Sale was completed today (2 April).

I'm ecstatic to have found my little red rocket what I believe will be a great home. The new owner is hoping to take photos of it in front of The Monte Carlo Casino, and on the F1 track before the Monaco Grand Prix. It's perhaps destined to be the menace of Monaco's motorways!

You can mark our glistening silver metallic West Coast Cobra SOLD! Headed for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada!

Your site's photography tips really served us well... the buyer purchased our car sight-unseen (except for our photos)! And he'll discover that it looks even better in person than in our photos.

Also, the fact that it is "Canada qualified" was also a top selling point. Indeed, I had several other inquiries from Canada, so the Canadians are really looking at your website, and looking for Cobras. We can attest to your site's 'global reach' (at least 'northern reach') and its effectiveness in reaching Cobra enthusiasts!

You can mark my LeMans Blue Shelby Cobra CSX4833 SOLD! Gone to a lucky new owner in Indiana.

I just wanted to say 'Thanks' for everything Cobra Country did to sell my CSX Cobra. I tried those "online auction sites" and the adage "You get what you pay for" rings true. The only quality buyers came from Cobra Country and the new owner was one of them.

Your help and direction in how to capture the best photos was invaluable advice and paramount to my success. My Cobra was listed in mid-January and sold in early March. I couldn't have been more pleased. Thanks again!

11 March 2012

Dear Cobra Country:

You can mark my Bright Green/Mecca Pearl Contemporary Cobra SOLD! Gone (as a wedding present) to a wonderful bride & groom in northern Virginia!

First thing I would like to say is thanks personally to Curt Scott of Cobra Country. Curt is reason my car sold at the price it did, when it did, to the young bride-to-be it did. Curt called me up after I sent him my first round of photos and gently informed me "We have to talk." I became—with Curt's guidance—an expert at photographing Cobras. Curt's Cobra photography tips could make a professional photographer out of a blind man. His pointers are quite straightforward, and above all impart the proper methods to shoot these cars. My Cobra was selected and purchased entirely because my second round of photos really captured its beauty.

The sale went flawlessly. From the first contact with Cobra Country, the photography lesson, the buyers' inquiries and every other aspect of this sale was not only professional, it was a joy. My car went for the price I wanted to some absolutely wonderful, appreciative people.

All of the guidance I encountered from Cobra Country was expert and spot-on for marketing and selling a high-priced motorcar over the internet. I cannot recommend Cobra Country more highly. I was even invited to the wedding, as was Curt.

Now that's how you market and sell and buy a car. See ya' in Gettysburg, Curt.

4 March 2012

Dear Cobra Country:

My E.R.A. Cobra was always blindingly fast—but did it set a record on your site? The first call for it came 45 minutes after the ad went live. The gentleman who made that call was the one who bought it! Due to scheduling snags, he was unable to consummate the deal for eight days. In that interim, NINE other serious calls and emails came in.

Pending first refusal, I kept each responder informed—but they never got a chance. Thanks to Curt's sage advice, his thorough knowledge of Cobras, the marketplace and his editing expertise, Cobra Country was the most effective way to reach my intended audience. It’s the ONLY ad I placed anywhere for my fine E.R.A. Cobra, and it essentially ‘sold’ in 45 minutes!

My car went to a great home and an appreciative family. They've chosen the pros at Vintage Motorsports Garage of Holliston, Massachusetts, to keep it in concours condition. I couldn’t be happier.

Many thanks to Curt—he's made a buyer and seller new friends for life.

PEAK "SELLING SEASON" IS UPON YOU:
1).If you have a Cobra or Daytona Coupe or GT40 to sell, email me a sampling (15 to 20 photos... no more!) you've already shot of your car (medium-to-high resolution); be sure to include your phone number(s);
2).I'll phone you back and go over your photos with you. If you'd benefit by reshooting some of your photos, I won't be shy... I'll advise you of that, and I'll explain why in detail, and I'll explain how you can achieve that much-improved (engine, cockpit, frontal, etc.) shot. You've heard me say this before, my Golden Rule of Motorcar Photography: Good photographs help you line up buyers; snapshots help you line your birdcage. Curt Scott

Superformance AC-289 Roadster, SPO2491. AC Racing Green Metallic/black German leather and olive green carpet. The BIG Picture: Click Here! Historical note: At the very end of original 427 Cobra production completed for Shelby in 1967, AC built twenty-seven 427-chassis cars with 289 motors installed for European and UK sales. This car replicates the spirit of those few cars. Under the hood: full-roller 5L (306 cid) Ford small-block V8; generates 340 h.p./370 ft. lbs. torque. BIG Photo of powerplant: Click Here! Outfitted with: Edelbrock 'Peformer' aluminum heads, Ford Motorsport E-303 camshaft, MSD billet distributor and Holman-Moody dual-plane intake manifold. My first Cobra was an ERA 427SC; this time around I wanted the pleasure of the sophisticated beauty of the “street” look with user-friendly performance; this beauty is extremely quick, but with excellent low-speed drivability. In-Your-Face frontal shot: Click Here! The exterior: period correct metallic paint with larger custom-cut clear vinyl stone shielding. Another BIG 3/4-view shot: Click Here! Rolling stock: the wheels have been stripped of the chrome-like “replica bling-factor” and after I had studied the look of original magnesium wheels, treated to a four-part "patina-ization" process; they're shod with Goodyear rubber. The AC badges are attached with adhesive and are willingly exchanged for Cobra badging if you prefer. The interior: the carpet in the interior and the trunk were upgraded with dense, commercial-grade "olive green/tan" carpet with leather piping for a cost of $3,800. BIG Photo of cockpit: Click Here! The shifter is the proper 289 unit. Shoulder harness is installed. BIG 3/4-rearview shot: Click Here! It's registered as a 1965; has logged only 10,800 miles (17,400 km). Done deal in an eyeblink! I received about 8 other serious responses in the meantime! And talk about 'global reach'... REDUCED! 1988 B.R.A. Cobra (manufactured in England and factory built by Beribo Replica Automobiles) Cobra. The BIG Picture: Click Here! Body is gelcoat Navy Blue, although the sunset light of these photos altered the appearance of the color. It does have a few minor blems and surface cracks in the fiberglass, but not visible from 10 ft away. B.R.A. made a very high quality reptile, and it's built very robustly. Powered by a 327 Chevrolet V8 (produces about 350 hp); new electric engine fan installed a year ago. BIG Photo of powerplant: Click Here! Engine has logged between 30,000–35,000 miles and runs strong. Muncie 4-speed gearbox, Jaguar undercarriage and rear end. In-Your-Face frontal shot: Click Here! Spax coil-over shocks. Wheels are Compomotive and rubber is brand new Grand Spirit Radial GTs. In the cockpit: period-correct Smiths gauges, Moto-Lita hardwood-rimmed steering wheel and forward-pointing shifter. Seats are Jaguar. This car was built for fun and dependability and I've used it as a daily driver in the summer months around Sacramento. Accessories include a rollbar, a top and side window frames. This is a California-registered car and therefore no CA DMV troubles. BIG Photo of cockpit: Click Here! This is a true “Gentleman’s Cobra” and eschews the stereotypical sidepipes, boy-racer stripes and rollbar. The pipes exit the back and a luggage rack on the trunk completes the '60s look of this little drivin' machine. BIG rear shot: Click Here! It's left hand drive, which gives it a whole “second kind of cool” over garden-variety Cobras. I have had my fun and driving thrills with this little roadster and I'm ready to move on. If you want an original-looking Cobra with a great "period-look patina" and very reliable mechanicals, this is the car for you. BIG "See ya' later!" shot: Click Here! It's a great value for the price I'm asking: $27,500 USD. This serpent should be importable into Canada: I purchased it in Ontario, Canada, where it was first registered in the late 1980s. But in Canada you'll need to check with Transport Canada to ascertain just what evidentiary documentation is needed for you to bring it back in. Click here for event details

I motored over 150 miles round trip and lugged my camera gear to this 50th Anniversary event with the objective of covering it for CobraCountry. I met several CobraCountry pilgrims at the show who approached me and told me they learned about it only with the notice they read here.

If you were there as either an exhibitor or as a visitor, let me know (my email link follows) what your take was/is on this NHRA-hosted affair.

4 March, 2012: My E.R.A. Charlie Amodeo

11 March 2012: You can mark my Bright Green/Mecca Pearl Contemporary Cobra SOLD! Doc Fallon

1 June: Mark that splendid black Backdraft Cobra #327 SOLD! There is no doubt that the advice your site provides on using your digital camera to capture really professional-quality photos is what expedited my selling my Cobra. Almost every caller commented on how gorgeous my Cobra is... even though all that they had to judge from was my photos. I received two offers from out-of-town folks who only saw my photographs—said offers if they desired, to coming and seeing my car in person. Ultimately the fellow who bought it drove up from Georgia (over 900 miles away) with a bank check and a car trailer attached to his vehicle—all ready to purchase based entirely upon the photographs on my Prestige Showcase page. Thanks again for your help with my Prestige Showcase page and for having a site which is so well known and respected in the Cobra community—it is far-and-away the #1 place to put your Cobra up for sale. All the best, Mike Giannetto

Cobra
Photography Tips

hotlink

You may think that all you need to know to take good photos of your Cobra is 1) how to turn on your camera, 2) how to aim it in the general direction of your serpent, and 3) how to press the shutter.

Think again.

That's the time-tested formula for capturing crappy snapshots that'll prompt all your potential buyers to flee screaming into the wilderness.

And justifiably so.

Photojournalist Curt Scott's latest revision has been carefully reworked just for you! It's a priceless investment of your time... a 'how-to manual' to very quickly enable you to capture professional-caliber photos of your Cobra or GT40.

Print it out, read it and heed it! And use the 7 'checklist' pages as you're snapping your shutter to make sure you take advantage of every expert tip.

Firefox browser
Update (23 August 2007): We had several folks report to us that certain versions of the Mozilla Firefox web browser do some strange things on CobraCountry. Specifically, images (such as the Cobra photos on this page) replace CobraCountry's main window/ frameset, instead of opening in a new window as our code mandates; when you close the photo, CobraCountry of course goes "poof!" and disappears. We received this 'fix' from Cobra aficionado Marty Shorey, of Milton Florida: "About the Firefox issue; I use Firefox with Mac and don't have a problem. You can set Firefox's preferences under "tabs" to "new page open in new tab" (or to "in a new window"); FF's new default is "in a new tab." Then when you're done drooling over the photograph, just close the picture "tab" and the browser reverts back to the tab that had CobraCountry open. It works easy for me. It's all about tabs, tabs, tabs." Curt's closing comments: you can of course set FF to open "in a new window," which I prefer, since I continually forget about "tabs" and close Firefox's entire window, expecting to be closing only the photograph—only to have CobraCountry go 'poof!'. Whatever your own preference, thank you, Marty, for resolving this dilemma.

Synthetic Oil: Rx for Long Engine Life

I keep getting questions about this ground-breaking treatise on synthetic oil that I researched and wrote in the early and mid-1980s, and first published way back in 1986.

Here's a hotlink to the only copy of that original article that I gave permission to be published (to Aaron Daniel, of the GetAHelmet.com website)... and the only copy on the Internet that I know of that is 100% replete with all of my original text, charts, captions and photos.
